Homework for parents and children.

Reading The News Tribune newspaper with your child, even at an early age, will give your child good reading habits that will last a life time. Plus, you can find fun and entertaining ways to use the newspaper to help educate your child. Here are a few fun examples:

1. "Happy or Unhappy"
Look through the pages of The News Tribune with your child. Prompt him or her to point out news photographs where the subjects of the photographs look happy and where the subjects look unhappy. Read a little of each news story and explain to him or her in your own words why the subjects are happy or unhappy.

2. "For Sale"
With your child, look through the advertisements in The News Tribune and help your child select one item that they would buy for their self or for a family member. Ask why they selected that particular item. Have your child cut out the chosen item and paste it on a sheet of construction paper.

Together, search The News Tribune for words that describe his or her selection. Have your child cut out these words and paste them down. If the item they have selected is for a family member, help them find letters in The News Tribune that spells that family member’s name.

3. "Famous People"
One of the jobs a newspaper performs is to report on famous people. Look through The News Tribune with your child and identify famous people. You can also turn to the comics section for "famous" comic characters.

With a heavy marking pen, print the names of five or six of the famous people you and your child identified in The News Tribune. Let your child cut out the names of the famous people you printed. Then ask your child to cut out the six photographs of famous people.

After the photographs have been cut and pasted on sheets of construction paper, pick up the name strips, read the names out loud to your child, and place each one on the correct photograph. To extend this activity, practice putting the names of the famous people in alphabetical order.
